This method is ideal for creating smooth and precise edges, whether you want curves or straight lines.
Mark the desired shape with chalk, as close to the edge as possible to make the best use of the slate slab and minimize waste.
Ensure the slab is well-supported and stable.
Use a ball-peen hammer and strike diagonally along the breaking edge towards the underside of the slab. The thicker the slate, the more force it can withstand.
Work gradually toward the chalk line for a rough, inward-sloping edge.
For precise curves, arcs, or a smoother edge, fine-tune the shape using a set chisel (or slate knife). Run the chisel along the chalk line while tapping the chisel’s end with a hammer.
