The University Garden at the University of Oslo is located between the university buildings along Karl Johans gate and was listed by the Directorate for Cultural Heritage in 2001. The garden was originally designed by Christian H. Grosch and is part of the historic university complex dating back to the mid-1800s.
During the 2013 restoration, great emphasis was placed on material use in line with conservation principles. Irregular slabs of Light Oppdal quartzite were selected for the walkways, laid in large formats using traditional methods. The slate is well suited to the historical environment and helps preserve the integrity of the protected park.
All the slate in the project is installed so it can be dismantled and reused. The transport distance from quarry to site is 390 km. The area is open for visits.
