Hubben at Uppsala Science Park was designed by White Arkitekter and completed in 2017. The building was developed for research and innovation environments within life sciences and technology and is certified to the LEED Platinum standard. The ground floor functions as an innovation hub and meeting space for startups, with laboratories and teaching facilities in the upper levels.
Indoors, tiles made of Offerdal quartzite with a natural surface were used, supplied in various thicknesses and formats. The slate was selected for its durability, short transport route, and low environmental footprint. The total emission value for the material, delivered to site, is calculated at 4.3 kg CO₂ equivalents per square metre, with a lifespan exceeding 60 years.
The slate was transported as a finished product from quarry to construction site over a distance of 580 km. The building is open for visits.
