Torvet Square in Trondheim was redesigned in 2020 based on a proposal by Agraff Arkitekter, with pattern design by Edith Lundebrekke. The former traffic-heavy site has been transformed into an open and flexible urban space, with clearly defined zones for recreation and events.

The paving consists of Offerdal quartzite in 592 x 592 mm format with a natural rustic surface, laid in a geometric pattern inspired by local craft traditions. The slate was chosen for its high durability and low maintenance, covering the entire square with a unified and robust expression.

The slate was transported as a finished product from quarry to construction site over a total distance of 250 km. The site is open for visits..

“Torvet in Trondheim has undergone a complete transformation from a traffic-dominated intersection to a festival ground and central urban space. The jury is impressed by the clear design, which connects to the heritage of Cicignon’s city plan – strict and orderly – combined with a seemingly soft use of materials despite being hard stone, with historical and traditional elements embedded in the ground. The furniture and vegetation encourage human activity and comfort in an open space. The urban area also evokes the feeling of large classical piazzas in Italy.”
