The Steam Hotel in Västerås is a converted steam power plant from the early 1900s. In 1999, the building was listed as a cultural heritage site and later transformed into a hotel, preserving industrial elements such as pipes, machinery, and brick walls. The hotel opened in 2017, with concept and interior design by Spik Studios.
Offerdal quartzite has been used for interior flooring in several zones, including the spa area on the 7th floor and the conservatory with views over Lake Mälaren. The conservatory features medium-sized flagstones, and the structure is designed to be removable in accordance with cultural heritage regulations.
The delivery included flagstones, natural tiles in 300 x 600 mm format, and skirting tiles in 100 x rl format.
In 1999, the building was designated as a cultural heritage site. Its historical character therefore had to be preserved, which presented a challenge as the listed status imposed numerous rules and regulations to be followed.
In 2019, the hotel added an orangery with views of the water and Offerdal quartzite flagstones on all floors. The winter garden was built in a way that allows it to be removed from the building if necessary, in compliance with the listed status requirements.
The Steam Hotel has grown rapidly in recent years and has become a destination that draws visitors from afar.
