This method for shaping and adjusting slate is used to create smooth and precise edges in shapes such as curves, bends, or straight lines. It's both easier, more comfortable, and results in a cleaner finish compared to using an angle grinder.

What You'll Need:

  • Chalk
  • Hammer
  • Slate knife

Draw the desired shape with chalk—preferably as close to the edge as possible to make the most of the slate slab and minimize waste.

Make sure the slate is lying stable and secure.

Use a ball-peen hammer to strike the edge at an angle toward the underside of the slab. The thicker the slate, the more force it can handle.

Don’t take off too much at once—gradually move inward until you’re close to the chalk line.

You will now have a rough edge that tapers inward.

For precise curves, bends, or smoother edges, use a slate knife or a chisel to fine-tune.

Guide the slate knife or chisel along the chalk line while tapping the blade with a hammer.
