A brushed and smooth surface with hints of texture, some sheen, varying grey tones and a rustic character.

The slate is quarried from Sæterfjellet, 18 km south of Oppdal. The surface is brushed to achieve a beautiful antique patina, where a subtle trace of the natural slate structure is retained, while remaining easy to clean and maintain. The brushing, as well as further adjustment of format and thickness, is performed locally at the quarry, ensuring consistent quality and a minimal climate footprint.

The mineral composition affects the slate’s technical properties, workability and visual expression. Light Oppdal quartzite is a metamorphic quartzite slate consisting mainly of quartz-based minerals with low content of porous components. The table shows the most common minerals in the stone, along with their impact on the material’s characteristics.
Quartz 46%
Provides high abrasion and compressive strength. Contributes to low water absorption and high mechanical resistance.
Mica 34%
Mainly muscovite and biotite. Affects the slate’s cleavage and surface texture. Can give visual gloss areas.
Feldspar 12%
Affects colour expression and gives variation in the surface. Has good chemical resistance.
Epidote 6%
Occurs in small amounts. Minimal effect on structure and no impact on colour or technical properties.
Titanite 2%
Occurs in small amounts and has no measurable impact on technical properties.

Descriptions of the material for facades and floors, outdoor and indoor:
Light grey cleavable quartzite slate in natural layers with a smooth surface where natural height variation in the plane is visible and clearly perceptible to the touch, corresponding to Light Oppdal Restfonna antique brushed surface. The expression is achieved with a unique brushing technique using various tool grains.
Cleavable natural stone with prominent layers or zones in different colours
A variation in colour tones from tile to tile (or brick to brick)
A play of light and dark grey colour tones in the form of lines, waves or stripes on a single tile/brick and variation between individual tiles/bricks
Possible to achieve a unique broken (hewn) edge with relatively precise lines, yet a natural and rustic expression
Flexural strength above 35 MPa
Water absorption max 0.2 percent
Slip resistance equivalent to at least R10
Durable and long-lasting
Long-term delivery reliability and documentation requirements:
EPD for life cycle assessments and CO₂ calculations
Historical data showing technical properties are maintained over time/not degraded despite patina development
Reuse potential (as long as the function description otherwise allows it)
Long-term operation plans
Future access to the same visual appearance and technical qualities
Established routines for testing and control
CE marked
Reference projects
Access to technical support and advisors
Other material requirements:
Must be a material from nature
The material must reflect the project’s history and/or location
See also reference projects for the desired expression
