A brushed and completely smooth surface with a distinct variation of natural character and light tones.

The slate is extracted from Sæterfjellet, 18 km south of Oppdal. A deeper brushing process enhances the minerals in the stone, giving it a distinct and unique character. At the same time, the completely smooth surface makes it easy to clean without compromising the excellent slip resistance. Brushing and further customization of size and thickness are done locally at the quarry, ensuring consistent quality and a minimal climate footprint.

The mineral composition affects the slate’s technical properties, workability, and visual expression. Light Oppdal quartzite is a metamorphic slate primarily composed of quartz-rich minerals with a low content of porous components. The table below lists the most common minerals in the stone and their impact on material properties.
Quartz 46%
Provides high abrasion and compressive strength. Contributes to low water absorption and high mechanical resistance.
Mica 34%
Mainly muscovite and biotite. Affects the slate’s cleavage and surface texture. Can create visual shimmer effects.
Feldspar 12%
Affects color expression and surface variation. Has good chemical resistance.
Epidote 6%
Occurs in small amounts. Minimal impact on structure, no effect on color or technical performance.
Titanite 2%
Occurs in small amounts and has no measurable impact on technical properties.

Descriptions of the material for facades and floors, indoors and outdoors:
Light grey cleavable quartzite slate in natural layers, giving a matte surface with a natural color variation similar to Light Oppdal Restfonna with silk brushed finish. The expression is achieved through a multi-step planing and brushing technique using different tool grits.
Cleavable natural stone with distinct layers or zones in varying colors
A variation in shades from tile to tile (or slate brick to slate brick)
A mix of light and dark grey shades in lines, waves or stripes on a single tile/brick and variation across tiles/bricks
Possibility for unique split (hewn) edges that offer relatively precise but naturally rough and rustic appearance
Flexural strength over 35 MPa
Water absorption max 0.2%
Slip resistance minimum R10
Durable and long-lasting
Long-term delivery reliability and documentation requirements:
EPD for life cycle assessments, CO₂ calculations
Track record showing long-term retention of technical properties despite patina development
Reuse potential (as long as functional descriptions allow)
Long-term maintenance plans
Future access to the same visual and technical qualities
Established routines for testing and quality control
CE marked
Reference projects
Access to technical support and advisor
Other material requirements:
Must be a natural material
Material should reflect the project’s history and/or location
