One of 8 tips from a garden designer: How to create a garden that works over time.

TIP 1 of 8

Garden designer Therese Andersen:

Many people choose plants and solutions based on what looks good at the moment.

But what determines whether a garden works is whether it suits your everyday life.

Are you away from home a lot? Do you want to spend little time on maintenance?

Then both the plants and the materials must be able to handle that.

Choose plants that thrive in the conditions where they are placed – sun, shade, soil, and climate – but that can also manage without frequent attention.

At the same time, think about the hard surfaces:

Choose materials that do not require treatment, covering, or regular maintenance.
