Do you want to lay crazy paving but are unsure how to calculate the amount you need? Here’s a guide to help you estimate how much you’ll require for a given area. It’s not complicated; you just need to ensure you have enough slate to achieve the desired effect, considering the level of customization and shaping of the flagstones you plan to do.
Measure the area that the crazy paving will cover.
Next, calculate how much extra slate you will need.
To determine an overrun for waste, you first need to consider the aesthetic effect you envision and the amount of customization required in shaping the crazy paving.
Check here for how to create various aesthetic effects with crazy paving.
On one side, we have a rustic effect with minimal customization (i.e., just light “trimming” of the existing shape). Here, you’ll need to spend some time finding the best possible match.
With such a low degree of shaping, you will end up with relatively rough joints of 5 – 10 cm.
As a guideline, calculate an overrun of about 10–15%. For example, if you need to cover 10 sqm, you should order 11–12 sqm.
On the other extreme, we have a high degree of customization where the flagstones are shaped precisely to fit together like puzzle pieces, possibly with straight and geometric forms.
Here, you might have narrow joints of 1 – 5 cm.
As a guideline, calculate an overrun of about 25%. For example, if you need to cover 10 sqm, you should order 12.5–13 sqm.
