This method can be used for slate tiles or slabs up to 5 cm thick and is great when you need a straight and perpendicular edge, especially if the edge will be visible. Light Oppdal Slate can easily be split by following the same principles as breaking glass (score and snap).

What You Need:

  • Breaking set
  • Crowbar

Score a 1–2 mm deep line using a scriber or similar tool.

Place a breaking hook perpendicular to the scored line and then position a steel bar underneath the hook.

Use a crowbar or similar tool to break the slate using the tension created.
