One of 8 tips from a garden designer: How to create a garden that works over time.

TIP 8 OF 8

GARDEN DESIGNER THERESE ANDERSEN:

The best gardens take their inspiration from something that already works – nature.

Look at how plants grow in rock crevices, along the coast, or in the mountains.
There you will find shapes, colours, and combinations that naturally belong together.

Nature also provides answers about what can actually withstand the conditions – wind, drought, and shallow soil.

Use that as inspiration when choosing both plants and materials.

By selecting natural materials that are available locally, you create a garden that fits its surroundings – and requires less maintenance over time.

Natural materials such as slate create a natural sense of cohesion in the garden – and can withstand both the climate and everyday use.
